GOTHENBURG
Göteborg, a gem on Sweden's west coast
Sweden's second-largest city is an exciting smorgasbord of great dining options, culture and nature, making it the ideal Scandinavian city break.
Göteborg, the largest seaport in Scandinavia, has become a popular destination for travellers who appreciate authentic experiences. Nestled at the mouth of the Göta River, Göteborg (or Gothenburg) is welcoming and buzzing, a place proud of its maritime heritage, where booming industry meets thriving innovation. A hotbed of young talent, music labels and fashion designers, Göteborg is an endless source of inspiration and ranks amongst the most sustainable cities in the world.
A historic place, Göteborg wears its rich past on its sleeve, whether in the streets around the city's old town, inside the galleries of its excellent museums or along the paths criss-crossing its venerable parks. It's also quirky: Göteborg is sure to surprise you with its floating hotel in a restored schooner, its sauna built from recycled materials and its plethora of vintage shops. Not to mention effortlessly cool, thanks to its hip neighbourhoods and starry restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide. Göteborg boasts an exceptional food scene, built on an appetite for sustainability and the city's flourishing locavore movement. Not surprisingly, fish and seafood caught in the chilly Nordic waters feature strongly on most menus. If you're a fan of craft beer, the city offers a host of breweries: Stigbergets and Beerbliotek are a couple of the city's top tap rooms where you can enjoy a glass of cold beer (in moderation).
Sweden's second city also makes a great springboard for getting out to visit the region's wonderful natural sites, including the coastal province of Bohuslän, which runs all the way to the Norwegian border, and the Göteborg archipelago. Its tiny fishing villages and wild inlets, swept by the north winds, await you just a short ferry ride away.
